The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced an increase of R10 in various grants, a move aimed at providing incremental financial relief to its beneficiaries.
According to the latest estimates, approximately 28 million South Africans benefit from SASSA grants, representing a significant portion of the country’s population of 64 million. This extensive coverage underscores the critical role of SASSA grants in supporting vulnerable sections of the population and addressing socio-economic challenges within the nation.
In a recent surge, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has reported receiving four million new applications for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant in the month of September alone, according to SABC News. This current total number of recipients to over 13 million, each receiving the stipulated R370 grant.
Despite the high volume of applications, SASSA has cautioned that not all applicants will be approved. The agency is in the process of conducting thorough verifications to determine eligibility. Paseka Letsatsi, a spokesperson for SASSA, outlined the current situation. “It’s important to understand that an application is not an automatic approval. Applicants are subjected to a rigorous verification process, and unfortunately, not everyone will qualify,” Letsatsi told SABC News.
The new increases for October have been detailed as follows:
Old Age Grants for individuals under 75, along with Disability and Care Dependency Grants, will see an increase from R2,180 to R2,190. Meanwhile, Old Age Grants for those over 75 and War Veterans Grants will rise from R2,200 to R2,210.
As the new grant increases take effect, SASSA reaffirms its commitment to bolstering social support systems.
