The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is urging workers nationwide to participate in a national strike on Monday, October 7th. The strike aims to highlight the severe economic issues plaguing South Africa, including high unemployment and escalating living costs.
COSATU, a major labor federation, highlights an alarming unemployment rate with millions of South Africans in need of jobs. In response, COSATU demands a halt on job retrenchments, criticizing companies which have announced significant job cuts. Such actions, according to COSATU, contradict the need to protect employment in a struggling economy.
COSATU is actively challenging a range of socioeconomic issues across South Africa. The federation is calling attention to critical problems such as the undermining of collective bargaining, highlighted by wage disputes in the City of Tshwane. Adding that rising crime rates, particularly gender-based violence, and escalating living costs with basic necessities exceeding the Consumer Price Index are adding to the countries problems. Additionally, they are voicing concerns about Eskom’s proposed electricity tariff hikes that could drive up inflation and, also shining a spotlight on measures that threaten the quality of education and teacher job security.
The federation’s move aims to unite workers across South Africa’s major urban centers to voice their collective concerns over these critical socioeconomic issues, demanding meaningful government and employer responses to the myriad challenges the country is facing.
As COSATU mobilizes for its National Day of Action, the streets of South Africa are set to be painted red.
