A Breath of Fresh Air: South Africa Welcomes Fuel Price Decrease

Starting Wednesday, 2 October, South Africans will feel some relief at the pumps as fuel prices are set to decrease across the board. This price adjustment, announced by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, signifies a positive shift in the economic landscape for consumers and businesses alike, bolstering hopes for a ripple effect of benefits across various sectors.

Here’s a breakdown of the forthcoming changes:

• Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): Decrease of R1.06 per litre.
• Petrol 95 (ULP & LRP): Decrease of R1.14 per litre.
• Diesel (0.05% sulphur): Decrease of R1.14 per litre.
• Diesel (0.005% sulphur): Decrease of R1.12 per litre.
• Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale): Decrease of R1.11 per litre.
• Single Maximum National Retail Price for illuminating paraffin: Decrease of R1.48 per litre.
• However, the Maximum LPGas Retail Price will see a slight increase of 23 cents.

A litre of 95 petrol, which currently retails at R22.19 in Gauteng, will adjust to R21.05. Meanwhile, on the coast, the price will shift from R21.40 to R20.26.

The decreases in fuel prices come as a welcome development, particularly in the context of global economic uncertainty. The reduced prices are primarily driven by a notable decrease in the average Brent Crude oil price, which fell from 78.54 USD to 72.82 USD per barrel. This shift is credited to increased production from major oil-producing countries, countering concerns over lower demand.
