Old Mutual Connect: A Fresh Entry in the Telecom Arena

Old Mutual, a powerhouse in the insurance sector, has expanded its offerings into the telecommunications space with the launch of Old Mutual Connect. This innovative move aligns with Old Mutual’s Integrated Financial Services (IFS) strategy, aiming to enhance the customer experience through additional, valuable services.

Clarence Nethengwe, Managing Director of the Old Mutual Mass Foundation Cluster and CEO designate of OM Bank, emphasized the significance of this initiative. “Affordable data and reliable connectivity are essential for our customers in the mass market to engage fully in the economy and to access our digital services effectively,” he noted.

Old Mutual Mobile, branded as Old Mutual Connect, is poised to transform how mobile services are delivered to the lower segment market, offering unparalleled value in data packages. For just R5, customers can pick up a SIM card at any Old Mutual branch, with the ability to purchase data and airtime through various channels including branches, partners, and online platforms.

The service boasts a variety of customizable data plans catering to different user needs, from data-intensive users to those who require basic communication services. Exciting promotions, such as a sign-up bonus offering 1GB of free data and a “double up” bundle—where customers receive a second data bundle free with any purchase—highlight Old Mutual’s commitment to providing great value.

Moreover, Old Mutual ensures a seamless customer experience with straightforward SIM registration (RICA) and number porting services available at their branches, backed by robust LTE network coverage across the country through partnerships with established infrastructure providers.

This launch comes at a time when the South African mobile market is witnessing innovative marketing strategies from new entrants like Melon Mobile, who recently captured the nation’s attention with a humorous, widespread billboard takeover marketing campaign. Melon Mobile distinguishes itself by offering a 14-day free trial and affordable data packages, such as 5GB for just R199. Their strategy not only emphasizes affordability but also ensures that potential customers can fully experience their service without initial cost, adding a competitive edge to their approach.

This raises the question: Are we on the cusp of a new era in mobile telecommunications, where consumers will see innovative value-for-money deals or comprehensive product bundles from industry frontrunners? What differentiating factors will the new players bring to the table that might encourage customers to switch from their current providers? Time will tell!
