Trump is set for the 2024 Presidency & the Potential Impact on South Africa

The U.S. elections are currently underway, and as millions of citizens have lined up to cast their votes, they now eagerly await the outcome. Results suggest Donald Trump will be the next US president, already delivering his Victory Speech.

This election cycle has been marked by vigorous debates and campaigns focusing on critical issues such as economic recovery, healthcare reform, and international relations. As the votes continue to be counted, the anticipation builds, not only within the United States but also among international observers who are closely monitoring how these results could affect global political dynamics.

Why should South Africa be interested in the US Election outcomes? Because the outcome of the elections could have a direct effect on our country. The value of the South African Rand, like many currencies, is influenced by a variety of factors including global market dynamics, domestic economic conditions, and international political events.

Generally, the Rand’s strength cannot be attributed to the U.S. presidency alone but is a result of a complex interplay of global economic conditions, investor sentiment, and domestic factors within South Africa.

During previous administration terms, the average exchange rates for the South African Rand against the U.S. Dollar were as follows:

  • Under Donald Trump (January 2017 – January 2021): The average exchange rate was approximately 14.49 ZAR/USD.

  • Under Joe Biden (January 2021 – November 2023): The average exchange rate has been approximately 14.99 ZAR/USD.

This suggests that the Rand was slightly stronger (lower value against the Dollar) during Trump’s presidency compared to Biden’s ongoing term, based on the average exchange rate data. However, it’s important to remember that exchange rates are influenced by a myriad of factors including global economic conditions, political events, and monetary policy decisions.

Let’s take a look at how the Trump Presidency could affect South Africa:

Donald Trump: His administration’s “America First” economic policies could lead to stricter trade terms but might also open up opportunities for direct bilateral negotiations, potentially beneficial for specific South African sectors like mining and agriculture.

The Trump administration’s foreign policy, often described as less interventionist compared to previous administrations, indirectly impacts global commodity prices, including fuel. By avoiding extensive military conflicts, there could be a stabilization in regions critical to oil production, which might help mitigate sharp increases in global oil prices.

For South Africa, this has specific economic implications: stable oil prices can lead to more predictable fuel costs domestically, which is crucial since the country imports a significant portion. Lower or stable fuel prices help contain logistics and transportation costs, which in turn can moderate the cost of living and inflation. Thus, a less interventionist U.S. foreign policy under a Trump administration could indirectly benefit South Africa by contributing to greater economic predictability and stability.

The U.S. presidential election has far-reaching implications beyond American borders, affecting global markets, diplomatic relations, and international policies. For South Africa, the election’s outcome could influence key economic factors, foreign aid, and environmental initiatives.
